Overview
What’s Buzzing was a multi-issue educational magazine developed for primary school students across Years 1–6. Each issue contained over 26 pages of articles, activities and visual learning content tailored to specific age groups.
I designed three of the six magazine covers and led the art direction, layout and illustration for the featured articles presented here, collaborating closely with experienced education content writers.

The Challenge
The core challenge was designing for six distinct developmental stages within primary education.
Each year level required:
• Age-appropriate visual language
• Adjusted typographic hierarchy
• Varied illustration complexity
• Differentiated content pacing
• Clear instructional graphics
The design needed to remain cohesive under the Teach Starter brand while adapting tone and cognitive load for each age group.
Approach
Working alongside a content writer with classroom teaching experience, I translated curriculum-aligned material into engaging visual narratives.
My role included:
• Art directing article layouts
• Designing modular page systems
• Creating custom illustrations and example graphics
• Adapting visual tone across year levels
• Ensuring clarity in instructional content
The covers I designed (Years 1–3) explored playful yet structured visual systems that aligned with both brand and age-specific engagement.
Outcome
• Six magazine issues published digitally via Teach Starter’s platform
• Over 26 pages of content per issue
• A scalable visual system adaptable across multiple year levels
• Strengthened alignment between pedagogy and visual communication
